As a result of water quality testing done earlier this year, most SD73 schools will be implementing a daily flushing program before the schools open for the day. At DT this means that all drinking fountains and classroom sinks will be run for one minute prior to student entry.
The testing revealed levels of lead in the water that are slightly above standards set by Health Canada. It was determined that the lead leached into the water from the solder used on the copper water lines. Further testing has shown that running the water for one minute reduces lead levels to well within acceptable limits.
The school district will continue with an annual testing protocol as per Ministry of Education requirements to ensure the water in schools and facilities is safe to drink.
